The National League South season gets underway with one of the division’s standout opening day fixtures, as promotion hopefuls Dorking Wanderers welcome former National League side Dagenham & Redbridge to Meadowbank.

For your Wanderers, the aim is clear: to build on last season’s campaign, which ended in play off disappointment, and mount another push for the title. Standing in their way are a Dagenham side looking to bounce back after an underwhelming 13th place finish last season.

The Opposition

Dagenham & Redbridge, known as the Daggers, are one of the biggest names in the division, having spent nine consecutive seasons in the National League before suffering relegation in 2024/25. Their first season back in the National League South did not go according to plan, with the Daggers finishing 13th, well below expectations.

The Essex club head into the new campaign under the management of Lee Allinson.

Off the pitch, Dagenham have attracted national attention following the arrival of KSI as a minority shareholder, taking a 29% stake alongside former Premier League striker Andy Carroll. The investment has brought renewed optimism, increased attendances and greater exposure for the club. Ultimately, however, the players’ performances on the pitch will determine whether they can challenge towards the top of the table this season.

Dagenham & Redbridge recorded two wins and two defeats during pre season. Their victories came against Hashtag United (2–1) and Crystal Palace Under-21s (5–0), while they suffered defeats against South Shields (0–1) and Elstree & Borehamwood (1–2).

The Summer Signings

The Wanderers have strengthened their squad with the addition of winger Harry Forster, whose pace and direct running should bring another dimension to Marc White’s attack. The Wanderers have also retained much of the squad that challenged near the top of the table last season, providing valuable continuity heading into the new campaign.

Dagenham have reshaped their squad over the summer following last season’s disappointing finish. With Allinson keen to implement a more aggressive style of play, several experienced National League players have arrived to complement the club’s youthful core.

Dagenham & Redbridge | Key Players

• Josh Rees – One of the division’s most creative midfielders, capable of unlocking defences and contributing important goals from midfield.

• Noah Coppin – An energetic attacking midfielder who established himself as an important player for Salisbury in the National League South. Comfortable operating as a number 10, second striker or even leading the line, Coppin is known for his intelligent movement, impressive work rate and eye for goal.

• Nathan Ashmore – The goalkeeper brings valuable Football League experience and could prove crucial if Dorking enjoy extended periods of possession and attacking pressure.

Recent meetings between the two sides have been closely contested.

• March 2026: Dagenham & Redbridge 1–0 Dorking Wanderers – A second-half goal from Oteh secured victory for the Daggers in front of a bumper crowd following the announcement of KSI’s investment.

• September 2025: Dorking Wanderers 0–0 Dagenham & Redbridge – The points were shared following a hard-fought stalemate at Meadowbank.

Across their recent meetings, neither side has enjoyed clear dominance, with the matches generally decided by fine margins.

The Key Battle

The midfield contest could prove decisive. Dorking will look to control possession and use their wide players to stretch the visitors, while Dagenham’s experienced midfield will aim to disrupt the Wanderers’ rhythm before launching quick counter-attacks.

If Alfie Rutherford receives quality service, Dagenham’s defence could face a stern examination. At the other end, keeping Josh Rees quiet could go a long way towards helping the Wanderers secure all three points.
