The Preview

The Wanderers return to Meadowbank on Tuesday evening as Chelmsford City make the trip to Surrey for an important early-season National League South encounter.

The Wanderers head into the fixture unbeaten in their last three league matches, having collected two wins and a draw. An impressive 4-1 victory away at Walton & Hersham was followed by George Francomb’s late winner in a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Truro City on Bank Holiday Monday.

The Wanderers then came close to completing a memorable comeback against Billericay Town. After falling 2-0 behind, two first half goals from Dawid Rogalski brought the Wanderers level before Jack Wood put Marc White’s side ahead. However, Frankie Merrifield’s 90th-minute equaliser denied the away side a third consecutive victory.

Those results have lifted the Wanderers to 11 points from seven matches, leaving them seventh in the early season table.

Chelmsford arrive with an unbeaten league record of their own. The Clarets have drawn five of their opening six matches, with their first victory of the campaign coming against Maidenhead United. Most recently, they came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against Salisbury.

With both sides looking to establish themselves in the upper half of the division, another positive result at Meadowbank would provide valuable momentum.

The Opposition

Chelmsford City, known as the Clarets, are an established National League South club based in Essex. They finished 10th in the division last season, recording 21 wins, 10 draws and 15 defeats from their 46 league matches.

The club have begun a new era under Mark Cooper, who was appointed as their 42nd permanent manager ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. The experienced manager led Forest Green Rovers to promotion to the Football League through the National League play offs and later won the National League South title with Yeovil Town. He also guided Swindon Town to the League One play off final.

Chelmsford’s ambitions remain high. The club moved to full time training under former manager Angelo Harrop as part of an attempt to strengthen their promotion push, but their 2025/26 league campaign ultimately fell short of expectations. Harrop departed before the end of the season, with Ricky Holmes taking interim charge. Cooper’s appointment represents a fresh start and a clear attempt to build another competitive, promotion-chasing side.

Their opening weeks of the season have demonstrated plenty of resilience. Chelmsford began with a 1-1 draw at Hemel Hempstead Town, followed by a goalless draw against Truro City and a 1-1 draw at Folkestone Invicta. George Alexander then marked his return to the club by scoring the winning goal against Maidenhead United. The Clarets subsequently came from behind to secure 1-1 draws against both Weston-super-Mare and Salisbury.

The Current Picture

The Wanderers opening seven league matches have produced three wins, two draws and two defeats, with 13 goals scored and eight conceded.

After losing their opening fixture against Dagenham & Redbridge and drawing at Maidenhead United, the Wanderers produced an impressive 3-0 away victory at AFC Totton. A narrow 3-2 defeat against Maidstone United was followed by a convincing win at Walton & Hersham and a hard-fought 1-0 success over Truro. Most recently, the Wanderers were denied victory by a late equaliser in a 3-3 draw at Billericay.

The Wanderers currently sit seventh with 11 points and a goal difference of +5. Chelmsford are 16th with eight points from six matches and a goal difference of +1. The Clarets’ match against Ebbsfleet United was postponed, meaning they have played one game fewer than the Wanderers.

For the Wanderers, the priority will be to return to winning ways and build the momentum required to climb further up the table. Marc White’s side have already demonstrated their attacking threat this season, while the clean sheet against Truro provided another encouraging defensive performance.

Chelmsford, meanwhile, have proved difficult to beat. Their five draws have included away points at Hemel Hempstead, Folkestone and Weston-super-Mare, while their only league victory so far came against Maidenhead.

Team News

The Wanderers’ latest medical update brought positive news regarding Harry Pinchard, who has returned to the pitch following his knee injury. His workload will now be carefully managed as he works towards regaining the fitness required to complete a full 90 minutes.

Josh Taylor, Jimmy Muitt and Dan Gallagher remain on longer term rehabilitation programmes, with their expected return windows extending into October.

Brennan Camp has been experiencing an accumulation of fatigue rather than a specific injury. His workload is being carefully managed, with the aim of having him available for selection.

The Wanderers have also added experienced defender Femi Ilesanmi to the squad. The 35-year-old made 51 appearances for Boreham Wood last season and has joined Dorking to provide further experience and strength to the defensive unit.

Players to Watch

Dawid Rogalski

Rogalski enters the fixture with confidence after scoring twice in the thrilling 3-3 draw against Billericay.

With the Wanderers trailing 2-0 after 38 minutes, Rogalski struck twice late in the first half to bring Marc White’s side level before the interval. He will be hoping to continue his promising start as a Wanderers player by finding the net again on Tuesday evening.

Alfie Rutherford

Rutherford remains a key attacking outlet. His movement and ability to threaten opponents in behind their defensive line have already made him an important part of the Wanderers’ attacking approach.

George Alexander

The Chelmsford forward has scored in each of the Clarets’ last three matches, making an immediate impact after rejoining the club on a one month loan from Hornchurch.

Alexander scored the winner against Maidenhead before finding the net in successive draws against Weston-super-Mare and Salisbury. Keeping him quiet will be an important challenge for Dorking’s defence.

Previous Meetings

Recent meetings between the sides have been closely contested.

The two clubs drew 1-1 at Chelmsford in October 2025, with 17-year-old Josh Hebert scoring a late equaliser for the Wanderers. The reverse fixture at Meadowbank in March 2026 also ended 1-1, with Charlie Carter getting on the scoresheet.

The 2024/25 campaign also produced a memorable meeting at Chelmsford, when the Wanderers recorded a convincing 4-0 away victory in November 2024.

The recent record suggests that another competitive encounter could be in store at Meadowbank.

The Tactical View

One of the key battles could come in midfield, where the home team will look to establish control and create opportunities for their forward players. The Wanderers have shown an ability to hurt opponents through combinations and movement in the final third, particularly during their victories over AFC Totton and Walton & Hersham.

Chelmsford’s unbeaten start suggests that the home side will need to remain patient. The Clarets have conceded only four league goals in six matches, so breaking down Cooper’s organised side could require persistence rather than relying solely on early pressure.

At the other end, Alexander provides Chelmsford with a focal point in attack. The Clarets’ ability to collect points away from home means the hosts will also need to avoid giving their opponents opportunities to turn the match into another tight contest.
